Cedar Sushi: A Symbolic Product Linking Forestry and Tradition

Revitalizing a Community Through Sustainable Design

The area of Keihoku in northern Kyoto, Japan, has a rich history in the forestry industry. However, with the decline in the use of domestic wood materials, the community has faced challenges, including a decline in forestry and fewer job opportunities for locals. In an effort to rebrand the depopulated area and encourage regional revitalization, designer Shigeki Kunimatsu has created Cedar Sushi, a unique product that combines forestry and traditional mackerel sushi.

Cedar Sushi is a mackerel sushi wrapped in thinly sliced cedar tree, a homage to the historical significance of mackerel in the region. In the past, mackerel was transported from the seaside to the old capital Kyoto via Keihoku's path, making it a precious delicacy in the deep mountains. The packaging for Cedar Sushi is made using local cedar materials and crafted by local forestry workers, showcasing the community's expertise and supporting the local economy.

The packaging materials for Cedar Sushi are all-natural and symbolize sustainable local lives. The treat is packed in a cedar box adorned with a drawing of a fish and a cedar leaf, representing the region's rich history and culture. This unique packaging not only preserves the freshness of the sushi but also tells a story of the community's connection to nature and its commitment to sustainability.

Through the Cedar Sushi project, Kunimatsu aimed to connect different players in the community and showcase their skills and appeal in one package. By bringing together forestry workers and a sushi chef, the project not only created a profitable product but also fostered collaboration and revitalization in the community. The success of Cedar Sushi has inspired other collaborations, such as cooking workshops for international travelers, providing them with an opportunity to learn about local and Japanese culture.

The Cedar Sushi project began in April 2017 and the designed product was completed and distributed in shops by August 2017. The location of the project was in Keihoku, the northern part of Kyoto. Kunimatsu's research involved immersing himself in the community, spending time with residents of all generations, and understanding the issues and possibilities of the area.

The project faced challenges in fostering collaboration among players from different industries within the conservative and tightly-knit community. However, Kunimatsu's belief in the power of design to create harmonious relationships and revitalize communities proved successful. By creating a concrete product that benefited both forestry workers and a sushi chef, Cedar Sushi became a symbol of cooperation and a catalyst for change.

The innovative design of Cedar Sushi has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in Packaging Design. This award acknowledges the creativity and resourcefulness of the design, as well as its contribution to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
